I have an iphone 3gs, not activated, don't know the baseband or firmware version. Anyway to activate it without knowing those things? If not, is there anyway to find those things without it being activated?
Am I stuck with a $200 paperweight? Any insight is greatly appreciated!

use tinyumbrella and chak your firmware version

You have to use tinyumbrella or itools to know some info about it.

Otherwise you can install custom 4.1 firm. It will activate auto.

Then, with your serial number, you can check if you can install ipad baseband for unlock.

Alright I used tinyumbrella to find the
firmware:4.3.5
base-band: 05.16.02-6.4_M3S2

any ideas what i should do?

yes its safe you can flash with ipad baseband

yes and you can update to last version and jailbreak and unlock its safe

Ive updated to 5.0.1 and saved a blob of it too using ifaith.
I tried jailbreaking with redsn0w, it said my device wont allow for untethered, so i tried messing with the settings and now i am stuck in a recovery loop.. and cant restore
what should i do now?
