no dear u cant check its ver. may be u can try forecast software . is this software show u ver. then its ok. other wise u have to restore. it & u cant make back up of customer's data. tell him clearly. then work on it.

just use spirit to jail break and then use redsn0w to unlock! that is all.

so if phone disable anyway to recognise either the i phone is 3g or 3gs??
if 2g easy cause the housing diferrent.

1.first conect itune in hold down home + power botton recovery mode
use active file.use snowbreeze
make ireb
press shift and restore 4.2.1 firmware
tick cydia and i pad baseband

loook on the back of the phone if the informantion is in sliver writing then the phone is 3gs if it is in black writing then its 3g
