Member: 958629 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | Hi. I am a noob to Debranding and all this. But I am getting an AT&T Blackberry Bold, and I want the option to force AMR-FR for better GSM call quality and also be able to Force 3G or GSM/EDGE. Can anyone explain on the best way to do this, I heard about VSM or whatever and someone said it has to be a specific version to get engineer mode and stuff like that. So what do I do and what features and or programs will I lose by debranding? Would I still be able to get the OS verisons when they come out. Thanks |

I got tired of the tedious chore of creating a VSM file manually with a hex editor so I wrote a script to do it for me. Check it out at http://c.site88.net/ It doesn't include ALL the fields yet, but It should take care of most people's customizing needs. I've only tried it on my 8700 series BlackBerry so far and it works great. Not only can you change your splash screen, but you can change the duration it is displayed...anything from subliminal to slothfull. RIM left plenty room for expansion with their Vendor ID's which can be as high as 65535 and as low as zero. I have tried both and several in between and all the magic smoke is safe inside my BlackBerry If your device is showing a vendor ID of -1 that means the checksum on the VSM file you used is invalid. You only have to change a single byte of a valid VSM file to make it invalid. Of course there is no need to go around with a vendor ID of -1 when you can easily create your own VSM file with the tool I made (or by hand if you prefer). Enjoy! |

Member: 956117 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 66 | Before trying to load your branding file, make sure that your BlackBerry has a white screen with the message "No Application Linked". This can be accomplished on the 8700g using cfp.exe (or hahanew.exe) and the file MFI-10396-034. If both are in the same directory and you have a command prompt open in that directory then type "cfp -u load MFI-10396-034" without the quotes. This may take a few minutes. The second step is to run MML.exe which you should have installed already. When the program opens, type ctrl-alt-shift-F12 to bring up the hidden menu. Click the "Load VSM..." button and browse to the branding file you would like to load. As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter what the name of the branding file is unless you care how it looks in your Software Parts List. If you failed to complete step one, you will get an error "Command Unsupported: 65338 Can't get confirmation. Cannot set Branding info. Cannot set Branding info. Cannot load VSM file." Once you have loaded the branding file, it is time to close the MFI Multiloader and reload your SFI file. You can use Application Loader to do this, but I prefer to use the command line "cfp -u load rim8700g.sfi". The SFI file is found in a directory under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\". Mine is at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\GPRS\rim8700g.sfi". Loading the SFI file will take a few minutes. When your BlackBerry boots up, you should see the changes you made to the branding except for the Welcome Message which will be noticed after doing a "javaloader -u wipe -f" or a "javaloader -u wipe" if you want to reload all the .cod files for some reason. Make sure to back up any data on your BlackBerry before doing any wipe if you don't want to loose it. Remember, doing a wipe is NOT a necessary part of loading the branding file, it is only needed if you want the Welcome Message to be recreated. |

-Click Mobile Network Eng.... -Voice Channel -Voice Stats -Highlight "Default" on the top line -Menu key -> Change Option -> AMR-F -Menu key -> Set Voice Codec -Esc until you're @ home screen Make a call. You can verify you're on FR during a call by going back into ALT+CAP+H (right from call screen) and to Voice Stats and "Preferred Codec" should read AMR-F and "Vocoder" should read AMR-FR. This setting DOESN'T stick after a device soft reset (batt pull etc..) Any ? let me know!

Member: 964029 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 0 | Hey, I want to try this debranding process but I'm concerned about two things. First, has anyone's blackberry been bricked as a result of this process? While some people can afford to take the risk I know that if this phone becomes a brick as a result of this process i'm going to have to go back to using a razr. Second, when you reinstall the os, does all your email info and programs go back onto it also? Thanks |

As far as I'm concerned, it was worth the risk and love the option to switch to between 3g and 2g when I want to switch, not when stupid ATT wants me to. -Mike
