The documentation is also here and you are welcome to use it to manually create your customized VSM.

Indeed, we couldn't get a better breakdown from you in that thread (in particlar post #7) and for this you certainly deserve to be commended for your efforts. Thank you elseWescott.

I'd like to know what you "reversed engineered" to make this tool which I cannot even see what you have done.

Just give me your email and I will PayPal you some cash, I would like to see what your tool can do for me and can it make me money as well?
RIM probably has their own tool to create VSM files, but I don't think anyone has access to it who is not a RIM employee, so no, this is not a BB tool with a skin on it. It is simply an online form that you fill out with as much or as little branding information you want to use that on-the-fly turns that information into a VSM file. I suppose you could market the service of applying a custom branding to BlackBerry devices for people if you wanted to make money using this tool.

I've added a PayPal donate button to the site for those who prefer that over TrialPay

I just completed the unbranding of my ATT bold last night. Everything worked out and I'm glad I finally decided to do it. I was wondering whether the visual voicemail will work on this bold when ATT releases it next month for BB's.

Before trying to load your branding file, make sure that your BlackBerry has a white screen with the message "No Application Linked". This can be accomplished on the 8700g using cfp.exe (or hahanew.exe) and the file MFI-10396-034. If both are in the same directory and you have a command prompt open in that directory then type "cfp -u load MFI-10396-034" without the quotes. This may take a few minutes.

The second step is to run MML.exe which you should have installed already. When the program opens, type ctrl-alt-shift-F12 to bring up the hidden menu. Click the "Load VSM..." button and browse to the branding file you would like to load. As far as I can tell, it doesn't matter what the name of the branding file is unless you care how it looks in your Software Parts List. If you failed to complete step one, you will get an error "Command Unsupported: 65338 Can't get confirmation. Cannot set Branding info. Cannot set Branding info. Cannot load VSM file."

Once you have loaded the branding file, it is time to close the MFI Multiloader and reload your SFI file. You can use Application Loader to do this, but I prefer to use the command line "cfp -u load rim8700g.sfi". The SFI file is found in a directory under "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\". Mine is at "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\Shared\Loader Files\GPRS\rim8700g.sfi". Loading the SFI file will take a few minutes. When your BlackBerry boots up, you should see the changes you made to the branding except for the Welcome Message which will be noticed after doing a "javaloader -u wipe -f" or a "javaloader -u wipe" if you want to reload all the .cod files for some reason. Make sure to back up any data on your BlackBerry before doing any wipe if you don't want to loose it. Remember, doing a wipe is NOT a necessary part of loading the branding file, it is only needed if you want the Welcome Message to be recreated.

elseWestoctt, I've used your method a few times and it's elegant. I'm wondering if using this method for loading SFI files allows one to upgrade and downgrade the OS without a full "load" of the OS? In other words, is ths SFI file essentially a copy of the entire OS in one file?

I'll be curious to see if this method allows me to avoid enterprise activation with my BES. I'll let you know when I try it.

The Java modules (.cod files) would still need to be changed out to get a complete upgrade or downgrade. You could, however accomplish that with a javaloader -u erase -f followed by a list of all modules you want to remove; then to reload javaloader -u load followed by a list of all the .cod files to install.

I have upgraded or downgraded just the sfi file and the device still booted and seemed OK.

i did everything in all the steps and i'm at the very last part where my phone says "no application linked <factory os>" and when i try to load the OS (after deleting vendor.xml) and i load up the desktop manager, it just hangs when "connecting to JVM" and I am wondering if anyone else has the same problem.. its just sitting there...

I finally got past the JVM error, it was solved by using Desktop manager version 4.7 and it was able to load in the OS no problem.

The splashscreen is set to the generic RIM logo, and in the menus I now have the ability to toggle between 2g and 3g on my ATT Bold.

However, whenever I switch it to 3g only or 2g & 3g my phone crashes with this error:

"Radio core catfailed! Reset"

Is there anyway to get around this or is my phone permanently bricked now?

Appreciate all the help.. but please, I desperately need some guidance..
