Smoking Genie :(

I plugged my (suppied) charger into my genie and puff of smoke came out of usb socket. Ive dismantled the box and can see that capacitor c6.1 is burnt out with direct short circuit. I see this is a 4.7uF 25v capacitor and I'm assuming it's burning (if charger in) because it has broken down and shorting direct to ground. Is it possible other damaged components or if I just replace this should it be ok?

Hi,

When you remove the capacitor, is there still short on the PCB ?

Sorry to hear about your problem.

I have just removed the capacitor and it definitely the cap that's got short circuit. What recommended cap to use? is it tantalum cap?

Hi,

Yes, you can put any with similar value(not lower voltage). Even not in SMD form. But are you sure this is the only damaged to the device ?

No I'm not "sure" this is the only damage but it does turn on ok without this cap so I'm assuming this is only problem but once I put in replacement cap Then I can test with charger connected.

Thank you for your reply.

Despite this hiccup I think Genie is one of (if not "the") best investments Ive made in this business, thanks for such a brilliant tool.

This man is a professional. And has a great attitude towards his work. Many of us can only, but benefit by following his example.

Problem solved!!!!!!!!

I got impatient, I couldnt get hold of SM capacitor and not even a tantalum bead type but I did have a 4.7uf 25v electrolytic capacitor (and you did say didnt need to be SM. So I soldered this in as a temporary measure last night and tested today by successfuly unlocking 2x N95, 1x N95-8G, 2x 6500C and a 6233. Ive tried with charger attached and although board gets a little warmer I think its ok.
I think this cap must have been defective in the begining because genie was supplied with 2 batteries but one just wouldnt charge so I took apart and saw that it was two gsm batteries in series to make the 7.2v and one of them was swollen, this is exactly what has happend to the second battery.

I made up new battery by dismantling 2x e71 high capacity batteries and using original Genie connector (and board) connected them in series and thats what I used today.

If anyone has problem with their box I suggest you contact support before breaking warranty seals unless its out of warranty (over 3 months old). I only looked in mine because I was prepared to buy a replacement if I f***ed up and I couldnt do without it (thats why I was impatient)

I love my Genie

Hi,

I think you have one of those first batch devices that had a bad battery. It has been discussed many times, maybe you missed the old threads.

About the capacitor, it is quite possible to been on lower voltage, but with overwritten details, i know its normal practice in China to label parts wrong by actual parts suppliers.

Anyway, good job on fixing it yourself.

BR, Alex

I suppose I didnt see old threads because I'm a new user of Genie (only had it a few months) but its strange how the second battery was fine until this cap went yet has same symptoms as the first one (one cell swollen).
I'm apprehensive about using the charger as the board seems to increase in temperature (only 5 -10 degrees) especially if lcd is on.
