T40 T40p T41 T41p T42 T42p you treat it as 24RF08

Locating the T4xx connection points
Switch the T4xx OFF.
You should have downloaded the hardware Maintenance Manual already, if you have not done so,
Click on the hyperlink below to download the PDF file containing the T43 Hardware Maintenance Manual, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the manual, Adobe Acrobat is FREE and can be obtained here -> Adobe Downloads once you have downloaded the files, close the browser window to return to this page.
The 24RF08 eeprom is located right under the network card, which is under the mouse touch pad, very simple to open, and very simple to locate the eeprom as well.
Keep individual modules and their screws separate to make it easier to re assemble it correctly

NOTE: you may have another eeprom installed at location U3, that other eeprom may be a 93C46, just ignore it.
NOTE: VCC is NOT connected, the ThinkPad supplies power to the eeprom later on we will switch on the TP to analyse the eeprom.

Assembling your TP

You need to re-assemble or partially re-assemble your TP [depending on your chosen connection method] as you will have to have it switched ON and running to read the eeprom.
Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual [FRU System Board], very carefully, double check screw type and size for each individual module. Assemble the TP in the reverse order used to dismantle it.

T43 T43p EEPROM you treat it as LSI

Locating the T43 connection points
Switch the T43 OFF.
For most T43s (Except Types 187x), here are the locations:
- for Type 187x see further down this page
An easy to get to connection point on T43 is in the Memory Bay underneath the T43

Carefully examine the 3 connections points above.
You are checking to make sure there is clean metal to contact later with the probes that will be pushed onto those points.
If there is a film coating the copper pads or the metal looks tarnished then carefully scrape it with a sharp blade to just remove the film or tarnish, take care we just need a small clean area to make contact with the sharp probes later.
If your T43 has a fingerprint scanner then disconnect the fingerprint scanner.
A more difficult connection point to access
Once you have your T43 HMM search the manual for "Removing and replacing a FRU" then scroll down to 1060 Keyboard, it's on Page 80 of the manual, follow the instructions in the manual to lift up the keyboard, leave it plugged in just move it forward toward you to reveal the connection points.
You should now be able to see U63, see photos below.
The connections we will use are near U63, just under the RAM module if one is fitted.
You will need to have some RAM in the T43 for use later when we switch it ON, no don't switch it ON just now, later OK.
If there is no RAM in the other DIMM slot, the one underneath the T43, then you will need to remove the RAM from above U63 and install it in the optional DIMM socket underneath the T43.
That other DIMM socket is illustrated on page 182 of the manual, item 2, undo the single screw on the cover to gain access.
If there is already RAM installed in the other DIMM socket underneath the T43 then you can just leave it there.
If there is no RAM installed in the other DIMM socket underneath the T43 then remove the RAM from under the keyboard and install it in the DIMM socket underneath the T43, later when all the work is done reverse the procedure.
The RAM is held by 2 clips one on each side
Use one finger nail on the end of each clip to pull the clip aside
DON'T BEND THEM, just pull it out sideways just enough so the RAM pops up, then you can remove it.
You must pull both clips at the same time,
use one finger from one hand to pull on one clip
and a finger from your other hand to pull on the other clip AT THE SAME TIME
and the RAM will pop up ready to be removed.
To install RAM into a DIMM socket start with the RAM at angle of 45 degrees to the board [note the RAM can only go in one way there is a key slot that is not in the middle, it only fits one way].
Holding the RAM at 45 degrees to the board insert the RAM into the socket, make sure it is in all the way, if it wont go in don't force it, turn it over till the key slot matches the socket. Hold it into the socket and slowly fold it down flat until the two clips snap over it to lock it in place.

Carefully examine the 3 connections points above.

If there is a film coating the copper pads or the metal looks tarnished then carefully scrape it with a sharp blade to just remove the film or tarnish, take care we just need a small clean area to make contact with the sharp probes later.

T60 T60p EEPROM you treat it as LSI

Locating the T60 connection points
Switch the T60 OFF.
You should have downloaded the hardware Maintenance Manual already, if you have not done so,
Click the hyperlink below to appropriate to your model T60 to download the PDF file containing the T60 Hardware Maintenance Manual, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the manual, Adobe Acrobat is FREE and can be obtained here -> Adobe Downloads once you have downloaded the files, close the browser window to return to this page.

once on the page, It is best to Right Click on the link above then Save "Target as" that way you will have a copy of the PDF file on your PC.

There are 2 possibilities with T60, different versions of the System board.
The Easy one just below or another one further below if your T60 does not match the easy method.
Easy method connection points are just under the keyboard, refer to Hardware Maintenance Manual Remove Keyboard and also Palm Rest and or Palm Rest and Fingerprint Reader.
Remove the palm rest, lift up Keyboard and put it aside backwards while it remains connected, on the left you can see a large LSI with the connection points for SDA and SCL, GND is connected to one of the metal clips holding the RAM cards.

NOTE: On some T60 variants there is a shield over the connection points just under the keyboard - thereby forcing you - to dismantle it in order to gain access to the connection points.
If your T60 doesn't look like the images above, then try the next image, the not so easy method.
note you do NOT remove the fan etc as has been done in the image above.
Once you have your HMM search the manual for "Removing and replacing a FRU" then scroll down to 1200 System Board, it's on Page 97 of the manual, follow the instructions in the manual to remove all the other FRUs to gain access to and remove the System Board.
You need to access the pads underneath the intel 82801GBM as illustrated below.
This is not easy, you will need to have the Keyboard and LCD plugged into the system board in such a way that none touch any contacts on the system board, use paper as an insulator to keep things from electrically shorting out, later you will need to plug in the AC adaptor and switch on the TP while holding 3 probes to the GND SCL and SDA points under the system board. Do NOT switch ON the T60 now, that will be done LATER.
Assembling your TP
You need to re-assemble your TP as you will have to have it switched ON and running to read the eeprom.
Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual [FRU System Board], very carefully, double check screw type and size for each individual module. Assemble the TP in the reverse order used to dismantle it.

Hardware Maintenance Manual - ThinkPad X60, X60s, X61, X61s
It is best to Right Click on the link above then Save "Target as" that way you will have a copy of the PDF file on your PC.

Once you have your HMM search the manual for "Removing and replacing a FRU"
Scroll down to the section on Keyboard, remove the keyboard and the top frame around the keyboard.

In the Hardware Maintenance manual scroll down to System Board, follow the instructions in the manual to remove all the other FRUs to gain access to and remove the System Board.
You need to access the pads of the Intel 8356908 chip illustrated below.
Note: SCL is the 3rd pin back from right hand the end, SCL pin is marked RED in the photo below.

GND wire is connected to any of the the metal clips that hold the RAM modules in place, you can to make it easier by wrapping the wire around one of the metal clips which saves you having to hold 3 things in place, just be careful it doesn't come off and touch something else.
Basically you make the X60 functional outside of it's case which includes mounting heat sink and fan on CPU.
You push the sharp probes onto GND SCL SDA or you can wrap the GND wire around the metal clips that hold the RAM, this is the reason you need 2 persons, not enough hands to hold the wires and run the software.
Do NOT switch ON the X60 now, that will be done LATER.
The sharpened probes will be used to contact the pads show in the photos above.

X61 X61s and X61t EEPROM you treat it as a 24RF08

Locating the X61 connection points
Switch the X61 OFF.
You should have downloaded the hardware Maintenance Manual already, if you have not done so,
Click on the hyperlink below to download the PDF file containing the X60 Hardware Maintenance Manual, you will need to install Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the manual, Adobe Acrobat is FREE and can be obtained here -> Adobe Downloads once you have downloaded the files, close the browser window to return to this page.

Remove the module in the middle of the image below to reveal the location of the Eeprom

Below is a close up of the Eeprom with the 3 connection points labelled, the image has been rotated the front of the X61 is at the top of the image.

NOTE: VCC is NOT connected, the ThinkPad supplies power to the eeprom later on we will switch on the TP to analyse the eeprom.
All the eeprom images are on this page are oriented the same way

Assembling your TP
You need to re-assemble your TP as you will have to have it switched ON and running to read the eeprom.
Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual [FRU System Board], very carefully, double check screw type and size for each individual module. Assemble the TP in the reverse order used to dismantle it.

You need to remove the RAM cover

Remove the RAM from SLOT 1, make sure there is RAM in SLOT 2r

Overall view of the 3 contact points

VERY CAREFULLY using a sharp blade such as Xacto or a box cutter blade - scrape away the green coating from the points labelled SDA SCL.
Also scrape away any film coating from the point labelled GND
