Fixed it by doing partition repair in TWRP.

But it won't bring back all the data that was lost

Hello.

Unfortunately new reset Screen Lock method removes user data. Currently this is the only way for phones with new firmwares. We'll try to improve the solution in future.

Old method still work fine.

Flash TWRP --> issue adb command --> flash stock recovery.

Easy. I can do that manually myself - still works on new firmwares. Why not do that - revert to old method?

At least remove new method or give warning about data loss.
