If you want only to READ the KI, you need a phoenix compatible device (like dejan's schematic).

If you need to program a new, blank Silvercard with Sim-emu firmware, then you need a PIC-programmer.

this are 2 different modes. The Pic-programmer PROGRAMS AND WRITES on the card, the Phoenix-reader COMMUNICATES WITH THE PROGRAM that is already on the card.
This is also the reason why you will always (except the new pll models) find a crystal on a phoenix device (3.579, 6, 10 Mhz) as this is the part for the communication.

the original sim has already a software (firmware) in it, that for you read the content with a..... phoenix.

The silvercard when new is BLANK. There you would make use of a PIC-programmer to write ONCE ONLY the Sim-emu firmware. When this step is done, you can use a phoenix to communicate with your Sim-emu card.

Hope this will clear some of your questions

Regards Chain

better if you buy a ready one, (1) it will be cheaper than making your own programmer, (2) it will work.

Phoenix reader/writer usualy have no problem with new generation computer, but most "free" circuits for pic-programming have problems as the timing and the voltage are very sensitive factors. i.e. JDM, Ludi and other are giving all work of the programming to the computer (like the Windows-only-modems if you remember). They were built for quick and dirty programming of chips with small capacity thus the programing took only few seconds. Does your computer have a serial port at all? (these were all made for serial port and required pure dos, win95/98/ME only and sometimes with luck... XP)

If you still insist, here is a schematic of a USB programmer that is built from common electronic devices: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=209937
