Help: Sim not supported

I have a iPhone 5 on 8.0.2 locked on Japan Softbank. My current network is Spark New Zealand (telecom NZ). I managed to activate it by choosing 4G CDMA mode (but my sim card is GSM so no signal) and then when I tried to change it to 4g tmsi mode I got the activation required notification and it tried to get me to re-activate but it just says "sim not supported" and to use a supported sim card. (Btw there was signal in this mode) I cannot access the home screen unless I take my sim out.
I tried another sim card but got stuck doing the same thing so I cannot access the phone sim applications page.
What do I do to activate it?
Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi (I mean GSM forum), you're my only hope.
