only to read trouble codes (diagnose) or read some parameters (voltage, self test...) - yes

to read all the parameters you must connect its sensor (pressure, water temperature...)

connect 12v, ground and K line to ECU (pinout see AutoData or ELSA)

connect 12v, ground and K line to VAG COM adapter.

use external 12v adapter for powering both ECU and VAG COM cable.

Do you have an aftermarket radio (Pioneer, Sony...) it was common problem, as they block in car diagnose because where is diagnostic pin in original radio EURO Connector and when it is connected to them (aftermarket radio), they give output 12v for automatic antenna in diagnostic pin and therefore block vag com adapter and also kill adapters without auto-protection IC inside...

Also is possible with some aftermarket ECU power-modules and such crap connected to any of K line of diagnostic as it is the same line with one root (that root is tachometer)

Do you have an aftermarket radio (Pioneer, Sony...)?

It was common problem, as when one install some aftermarket radio, it then blocks in car diagnose system for most of the components (not all) because where commonly was pin for automatic antenna (+12v switched) VW decided to put its diagnostic K line for original VW radios inside EURO Connector.

So when everything is from factory - no problems, but when one installs aftermarket radio it puts output 12v for automatic antenna in diagnostic pin and therefore block vag com adapter and also kill adapters without auto-protection IC inside, and killed some original VW VAS diagnostic scanners as I have heard

If you have not original radio, first suggestion is to disconnect it from car and then try to diagnose.

Another possibility is that K line for motordiagnose goes to Engine ECU not directly from OBD2 connector like for airbag etc. but through Instrument Cluster (Tachometer). If aftermarket radio is not the case of the problem, than maybe Instruments got defective not to pass Diagnose signal to engine ECU any more as it should.
