£3Gs Suggestions

Hello all
Iv just bought a16gb 3Gs in great condition. However it is not that great internally. In that i met the guy halfway and all seamed ok. But on getting home its not got that much signal. Iv read about the usual things to do such as the Ultrasn0w and switch off 3g but this phone will not take that due to the f.w Which is ios 6.1 and bb 5.16 And from all the reading this seams a problem. It is also jail broken. Iv read and read up and can only find the suggestion to first upgrade the f/w bb then downgrade t about 3 times in all. is this the only way > oh my phome was made week 36 2008.
Any other suggestions please? thanks
