Is your apple ID ready? If it is then you are good to go. You could download some apps and not all apps. Better you get yourself a new iPhone ahead of your 3GS.

sorry, but there are some false informations in your post... Multitasking came out with iOS 4 and the Notification Center was released with iOS 5 ;-)
