How do I update my unlocked 3g running 3.0 without updating the baseband?

Hey I heard there are some problems with blackrain such as no wifi or no youtube and was wondering how exactly I update my 3.0 iphone 3g to 3.1.2 without updating the baseband so I can still use my ultrasn0w??

I have a windows computer just in case that matters.

Just flash one of this patched firmwares around. They do update firmware but leave baseband untouched. You can also flash normal Apple firmware to get 3.1.2 with 5.x baseband and then flash patched firmware to get normal jailbreak and use blacksn0w from cydia. Blacksn0w as simlock unlocker works fine, only blackra1n as jailbreak causes problems sometimes.

Just unpack first file and you'll get .ipsw. It doesn't upgrade baseband.

Cool Thanks. So I download the first link u posted. plug my phone in, go to itunes. press shift+update and click the custom restore file.

Then my phone will still have all the stuff I had on it originally and still be unlocked?

Sadly not. To flash custom firmware you have to put iPhone in DFU mode what limits you to restore function only. I guess you can make backup and then restore it so you should get your apps and data back after flashing with custom firmware. Also, don't forget to install ultrasn0w or blacksn0w from cydia depending on baseband.

oh really, dam that *****. well my phone is unlocked and jailbroken already at the moment on 3.0

Think if I just updated with the regular iphone software and then used blacksn0w to rejailbreak and unlock everything will still be left on my phone just as it was before i updated?

That would work, but since people says Apple released 3.1.3 firmware you'd need to download original 3.1.2 .ipsw and update it with SHIFT+update and selecting a file. Original 3.1.2 firmware is available here: click.

You'd also need to jailbreak it with blackra1n and it causes problems _sometimes_. You can take a look at few topics around where people complaining about issues with wifi/network. These problems are quite random and your phone may not have them at all (9 out of 10 phones i've done with blackra1n works fine, 1 had wifi issues). I haven't seen any software to jailbreak working directly other than blackra1n (like redsn0w in the past) so that's the only way for now. I prefer solution with custom .ipsw so customers won't complain me later ;P
