Hello!

S-OFF itself does not cause data-loss, but since S-OFF flag is a part of the encryption algo it's better that you back up first, S-OFF and restore data.

If your bootloader is unlocked you can run TWRP and make userdata backup.

my bootloader is locked, I can’t take a backup.

I was hoping to s-off to install twrp.
are you saying installation will cause data loss?

Here's what I'm thinking:

1. S-OFF
2. Install TWRP
3. Use TWRP for what I need
4. S-ON
5. Use Phone as normal, without any data loss from steps 1-4

Will it work?

What's your android version? Newer Android versions does not support permanent S-OFF and may require bootloader unlock to gain S-OFF.
