Member: 1714970 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 1 | How To Upgrade Your HTC Universal ROMs [Work In Progress] New TopicPost ReplySubscribePermalinkRSS Feed rhmartin • Member • 1114 postsQuote • 28.10.2007 03:07 • 1 people like this • Disclaimer: * compiled from resources in the web, no claims of ownership made for texts & figures adopted in the post * ROM update involves erasing & replacement of OS & Radio ROM's. Although the instructions had been carefully & meticulously written based from experience, there's a possibility of incidents beyond your control that may brick your device. * It is preferable to use a fully charged notebook or a UPS powered PC to avoid power loss which could brick your device during the update. What you need before the upgrade: The following procedures are required if you intend to rollback to the Original WM5 ROM (in case you want to sell the device), otherwise if you have the installation files or a download of your original WM5 ROM, then skip procedure below & proceed to 1.k. 1. Backup your Bootloader, Extended ROM, WinCE ROM, Radio ROM & PIM (contacts, tasks, emails) Using MTTY116 Utility uploaded here: a. Disable USB ActiveSync connection in your PC/Notebook b. Place PPC in bootloader mode: Press & hold Power + Backlight + Reset until text "Serial appears in PPC screen c. Connect your PPC to PC/Notebook using the USB cable d. Run MTTY.exe in your PC e. Select \\. \WCEUSBSH001in the Port drop down list f. Insert a blank 128Mb SD/MMC card in PPC g. Click "Ok" & Press "Enter" in the MTTY screen to display USB> prompt h: Type task 32 USB>task 32 USB>d2s 70000000 80000 (this will backup your bootloader to SD/MMC) Press Enter “Store image to SD/MMC card successful” displays in PC & "Checksum Ok" should display in PPC if successful USB>d2s 70100000 3FA0000 sd a (this will backup your WINCE ROM & Splash screen to SD/MMC) Press Enter Wait for 7 - 8 minutes “Store image to SD/MMC card successful” displays in PC & "Checksum Ok" should display in PPC if successful USB>d2s 74100000 A00000 sd a (this will backup your Extended ROM to SD/MMC) Press Enter “Store image to SD/MMC card successful” displays in PC & "Checksum Ok" should display in PPC if successful USB>d2s 60000000 a24200 sd a (this will backup your Extended ROM to SD/MMC) Press Enter “Store image to SD/MMC card successful” displays in PC & "Checksum Ok" should display in PPC if successful i. Backup of Bootloader, Extended ROM, WINCE + Splash Screen & Radio ROM is done. Remove SD/MMC j. Soft Reset k. To backup PIM: Use ActiveSync to synchronize PPC with MS Outlook. The backup created by the built-in PPC programs/utilities may not be readable in the new OS to be installed. 2. You need to choose an OS ROM (usually nk.nbf, or an automated install exe file) You need to decide which Windows Mobile (WM) version plan to install If you want a fully functional OS choose WM5 If you want the latest technologies & enhancements but no video call (as of today Oct 27 2007) choose WM6 3. You also need to choose a Radio ROM (radio_.nbf) Some upgrade files comes with both the OS & Radio ROM The currently recommended version is V1.15. Version 1.18 is available & some are using it without any problems You may choose to retain your current radio ROM even if it's not the recommended one, just remove the radio_.nbf file in the upgrade directory. 4. Your HTC Universal USB data/charger cable 5. Microsoft ActiveSync (AS) installed in your PC or Notebook. AS version 4.5 is required if you choose WM6 ROM Preparations in your PC/Notebook: 1. USB cable is directly connected to the PC (don’t use USB hub). 2. Disable the standby and hibernation modes on your PC (these may interfere upgrade process) 3. You need to close all other applications on your PC. 4. Extract the upgrade files if it is in .rar or .zip archive into a directory in your PC. Example: C:\Temp 5. Check for the file contents in the C:\Temp (as in example above) the ROM package should contain: a. EnterBL.exe b. GetDeviceData.exe c. MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe (this is a special file created to bypass country, language ID checking of your device) d. RUU.conf e. RUU.dll f. UI.dll g. nk.nbf (this is your OS ROM) h. radio_.nbf (this is your radio ROM) If you only have the OS & Radio ROM's (nk.nbf & radio_.nbf), just extract the ROM Package above & drop the OS & Radio ROMs in the directory. Preparations in your HTC Universal 1. Ensure that your device is fully charged. Failure to do so may brick your device! 2. It is highly recommended to remove the SD Card in your PPC slot. The Upgrade Procedure 1. Put your device into “Bootloader mode” : Press & hold backlight and power buttons then press reset button (the text "Serial" should appear at the top of the screen) 2. Connect your device to the PC/Notebook using the USB cable. (The text "USB" should replace the text "Serial" at the top of the screen) 3. Go to your PC & execute (double click) MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe The Welcome screen should display in your PC: Read more: How to upgrade your HTC Universal ROMs [Work in progress] :: Forum Follow us: @buzzdev on Twitter |
