Thumbs up iPhone Dev-Team >>> IPHONE 3G UNLOCK DONE <<< (UPDATES)

1/1/2009
UPDATE

IPHONE 3G UNLOCK DONE
THANXZ TO DEV TEAM

Hello all,

We wish you a very happy, healthy, and hopeful 2009!

We’re about to release the yellowsn0w 3G unlock application, and we have some information that you may find useful:

BASICS

The unlock about to be released works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.
The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).
You can add the application using the sources outlined below (coming soon). There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.

KNOWN ISSUES

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix.
For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM

The application is version 0.9. This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.
Direct linking to the repository URLs is prohibited, please only link to this post. We will be checking referers.
Happy 2009 and enjoy!

The iPhone 3G is used all over the world with all sorts of SIM cards, and we almost certainly will see untested and unexpected situations. If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can

Now to explain the above screenshot. The soft unlock has undergone many changes in the last two days. The most significant one: the soft unlock will now be only for baseband 02.28.00 (the most recent baseband). Yes we’ve been advising everyone to avoid updating their basebands, and in general that will always be the best policy. Not every baseband version is guaranteed to have a hole through which we can inject the unlock.

The yellowsn0w Cydia package will be available as soon as our devteam member in charge of the repo wakes up to fix a file permission error. (b) Once it’s out, those users with SIMs that have apps and other menus on them will need to do that extra step we’ve been talking about. They’ll need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP. (c) You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen. (d) Yes it really is for baseband 02.28.00. That means everyone can use it now! (e) Happy New Year!

Converted to Ascii the message reads "vtaber 61060174". vtaber converted to ROT13 reads, "ignore".

It is possible that this means to ignore post 61060174 on the iPhone Dev-Team's blog. The post entitled, "The man from DelMonte - He say Yes!" is a warning not to update to iPhone firmware 2.2 using iTunes. Perhaps the iPhone Dev-Team has figured out a way to unlock the new baseband that came with 2.2 as well.

UPDATE 2

The scamming douchebag is at it again. We DO NOT have a twitter account called ‘yellownsn0w’, and similarly no .net domain name related to yellowsn0w, don’t add this to your bookmarks. We would like you guys (currently 29 of you) to stop following him on twitter, and to also block him if he is following you. We need to see that 29 number decrease! do it people! He is a spammer! :-(

UPDATE 3

yellowsn0w isn’t released yet. Don’t bother wasting keypresses and valuable drinking time searching repos or the web for it, as soon as it is released we’ll announce the details here :-)

UPDATE 4
It is now confirmed, the iPhone Dev has unlocked the 2.2 Baseband (2.28.00)

Live Demo of the iPhone 3G Unlock Today!

Today, at 3PM EST, MuscleNerd, will show a live demo of the iPhone 3G unlock from the Qik application on the iPhone.

It will be broadcasted from a 2G iPhone, showing the soft-unlock of the iPhone 3G. The actual URL will be tweeted via MuscleNerd’s twitter account once it starts.

This week’s DevTeam Funday features a live demo of yellowsn0w!

MuscleNerd will use Qik to broadcast a live video and audio stream (from an iPhone 2G) of an iPhone 3G being soft-unlocked with yellowsn0w. He’s in Florida for the holidays so there won’t actually be any snow in the live demo (although strangely enough if he were back home in Los Angeles he’d be very close to snow this week!).

Qik creates a chatroom for its videos but it may not be feasible to field questions live from the chatroom. So if you have a question that hasn’t already been answered in our previous blog posts, please tweet them in advance to Musclenerd.

We’re aiming to do the live demo in about 12 hours, or 3PM EST. The actual URL will be tweeted via MuscleNerd’s twitter account just as it starts.

Hope to see you there!

UPDATE - 1.45PM EST/7.45 CET

Here is a short video from MuscleNerd’s Qik account that has some preliminary information that relates to his AT&T SIM card. This also demonstrates the video and sound quality that you should expect during the demonstration. We plan to capture the VNC session that you can see in the background so that we can post a more detailed video later.

UPDATE - 2.52PM EST/8.52 CET

Get your popcorn and soda ready for the main feature, there may be a little delay while MuscleNerd aligns his camera and inserts his cables , look out for the stream URL on MuscleNerd’s twitter

HERE IS PRE -DEMO VIDEO

iPhone 3G Unlock Coming New Years Eve

The iPhone Dev-Team plans to release the 3G unlock (codenamed yellowsn0w) for the 02.11.07 baseband on New Years Eve, according to a post on their blog.

'Tis the Season to be Jolly!

Now that you guys have got used to the sunburn and blindness caused by the glare of our new blog template, we can get back to normal business. We’ll give you some updates and also tell you our schedule for the festive season.

Over the Christmas break some of our members will be talking at the Chaos Computer Club’s 25C3 Congress. This talk will be a ***** technical talk relating to iPhone platform and our previous exploits. You can see more information about the talk “Hacking the iPhone”. There is even a super-cool TeamPwnapple ******** ;-)

We have been working hard on a few other things. The main one being the 3G unlock codenamed “yellowsn0w”. This is now completed and is currently being packaged into a user-friendly application with the simplicity that you see in QuickPwn or BootNeuter.

The target release date for the unlock is New Year’s Eve 2008.
This unlock method is available to iPhone 3Gs that have 2.11.07 baseband or earlier, we did warn you.
The unlock requires a jailbroken 3G iPhone.

DFU Problems

Lots of users have been experiencing problems with the use of DFU mode after applying yesterday’s 10.5.6 system update.

We believe this behavior is due to a kernel bug not a specific countermeasure by Apple. Possible fixes are (try at your own risk!) -

1. Replace the following plugin kexts from within IOUSBFamily.kext with the ones from 10.5.5 and then rebuild kextcache (if you don’t understand this, then you shouldn’t attempt it!)

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBHub.kext

/System/Library/Extensions/IOUSBFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/IOUSBCompositeDriver.kext

2. Use a USB hub in-between the DFU device and the Mac and insert/reinsert the iPhone’s USB cable.

3. Use a PwnageTool created .ipsw on Windows! Oh the irony!

UPDATES 19/11/2008

In a post on their blog the iPhone Dev-Team has announced they are one step closer to a 3G unlock and now have a clear path to follow.

-----
This ability we now have to spawn background tasks means we are one step closer to the 3G soft unlock. We have a clear path to follow, and “all” that remains is the implementation.

A quick summary of the key 3G-unlock-related achievements we’ve made so far:
1. Unsigned code execution on 3G baseband
2. Reverting 01.45 baseband to previous versions
3. Patching of static text (the AT&V demo)
4. Injection of AT routines (the task list demo)
5. Injection of background tasks (this demo)

Now it’s on to overriding the baseband code that enforces the carrier lock.

A high-quality version of the video is available via bittorrent here.

P.S. That “One more thing!” text is being generated by the backgrounded “steve” task at 5-second intervals. The “A0” is the task’s priority.

P.P.S. Remember…don’t update to official 2.2 when it comes out if you ultimately want a 3G soft unlock!
