i have tried all but still the same
right i had the same issues and i tried lots of things and im on 3g and now 4.1.2 and this was the last thing i tried before i got it working

again iPhone 3G (not s) *Using 4.1 firmware NOT 4.1.2*

1)plug your phone into PC and load redsn0w_win_0.9.6b5 click to load iPhone1,2_4.1_8B117_Restore firmware then just click enter pawned DFU mode now. (nothing else)

2)load itunes it will say your phone was found in recovery mode and needs to be restored so press "shift" and point to iPhone1,2_4.1_8B117_Restore firmware - it installs and after about 10mins you get 1015 error

3) your phone will now be on the itunes USB cable screen

4) load tinyumbrella-4.21.01 it will detect a iphone just press Exit Recovery

5)Wait about 2minutes and the phone Should reboot and go back to the firmware apple loading screen - which after about 2mins does a strange apple install screen like firmware updgrade

6) After about 2mins you should be back onto the apple stock activation screen - well that is what i see becuase my phone is not unlocked

7) Go back to redsnow loading the 4.1 firmware Again NOT 4.1.2 and select jailbreak using the cydia and percent (and other options if you need except baseband)

5) once the iphone is rebooted and it should be fixed

if its fixed - you can keep as it is or do the same but swaping the to firmware 4.1.2

but when you do a full jailbreak on the last point 7) the phone is hackivated via redsnow which by-passed that screen and activates your phone taking you to the springboard

also check out the NEW redsnow this morning https://sites.google.com/a/iphone-dev.com/files/home/redsn0w_win_0.9.6b6.zip?attredirects=0&d=1

which is use to hackivate your phone better via SAM http://www.bingner.com/SAM.html

Installation

This will allow you to do official activation on an iPhone without a stock SIM

This is pointless on anything but an iPhone

Add http://repo.bingner.com as a repo in Cydia
Install "SAM" and "SAMPrefs"
Follow the steps in Troubleshooting/Hacktivated with redsn0w or PwnageTool
Go to Settings > SAM and click "De-Activate iPhone"
Activate with iTunes
If iTunes says invalid SIM, you will need to manually select the appropriate carrier under one of the methods besides "Automatic" and click on a SIMID.
Troubleshooting

Hacktivated with redsn0w or PwnageTool:

You will need to revert to a stock lockdownd for SAM to function
Option #1: redsn0w for iPhone 3G or 3GS on firmware 4.0 or later
Download redsn0w 0.9.6b6 or later from http://blog.iphone-dev.org
Run redsn0w and select the "Deactivate" option
Option #2: my custom stockify program - works on any phone 3.0+
With SAM and SAMPrefs installed; install openssh and secure shell into your phone. Run "stockify" and it will revert your lockdownd to a stock lockdownd
Reboot your phone

Thanks for Posting the info about the tiny umbrella
had tried all other ways with no joy. Went through the process last night
and cracked the 1015 error. Been trying to get past that since last weekend.
I would have been glad just to get back to the apple main screen with cydia
installed. Tried the unlock this morning and managed to get the T.mob sim working.
Thanks again
Regards
Ian H

still stuck on recovery mode ... badly need help

hi everyone,

initially, successfully upgrade 3.1.2 to 4.0.1 then to 4.2.1 and unlocked.

after some time of installing ipa files and sync with itunes 10.1.x my iphone crashes forcing me to reboot.

unfortunately it started me in a cycle of "recovery mode" state.

----------------- for some time followed some guides to perform recovery for this issues ------------

TRIED THIS GUIDE BUT FAILED ME (1601) ERROR USING CUSTOM FW

Stuck with ios 4.2.1 BB6.15 3G

THIS REALLY DRAINED MY HEAD FOR 48HRs TRYING TO RECOVER MY UNIT.

GLAD DID WORK FOR ME AND HOPE CAN HELP OTHERS

tried to restore using many guides and failed.

this was a collection of the guides provided in this forum, just have to mixk them out and voala it worked!

(make sure no sim is inserted)

1. uninstalled all apple softwares in my PC (WinXP)
2. use Windows Clean Up Utility to delete all related apple softwares
(iTUnes)
(Safari)
(QTime)
(Mobile Installation Support)
(Apple Appplication Support)
(Bonjour)
3. Do a fresh install of itunes (do it online), then update everything from itunes.
----------------------------
4. Start itunes
5. Plugin ur iPhone and allow itunes to detect everthing. the close itunes.
6. Then turn off your iphone (make sure ite off)
7. use redsnow 096b5 and flash iphone using stock firmware 4.2.1 (this should take a while ending up in either in recovery mode)
8. now use ireb r2 and click ung device (for me 3G)
8. perform DFU method until your screen turns green.
7. start itune again and this time load the custome firmware.
8. use CUSTOME FIRMWARE 4.1
-->iPhone1_2_4.1_8B117_Custom_Restore.ipsw

UPLOADED TO:

9. wait until itunes finishes, the cycle should take about 2 times (showing firmware restoration and firmware installatiion)
10. now your iphone lives again (take note it will be in 4.1 bb 6.15)

11.check if cydia is already available if not then use redsnow 096b5 and 4.1 stock firmware to jailbreak.
12. now perform unlock using repo666.ultrasn0w.com

I was able to get to 4.2.1!

I used pwnage tool to create a custom FW with 4.2.1.
I launched Pwnage tool (SIMPLE MODE)and selected iPhone1,2_4.2.1_8C148_Restore,
when asked to upgrade iphone baseband to iphone select NO. Then select build.
I have an AT&T sim so i selected YES to activate through itunes.

After OS build i put iphone in DFU mode (blank screen). and restore with Itunes.

I am going to jailbreak now and see how it goes.

Help Please

I tried jailbreaking my 3gs with the redsnow 0.9.6b6 and was successful till the point when it rebooted and cydia would not load. I updated the firmware to 6.15.0.0 and had checks in the ipad and cydia boxes.

My problems really started when I tried to recover, i was using 4.2.1 and itunes 10.1. the recovery stalled at the end of the firmware upgrade section and is caught in a recovery loop. I can not get it out of this loop and load to any screens. I tried launching it tethered, i tried custom boot to 4.2.1 and even tried back to 4.1, both using DFU which i verified with recboot. Tinyumbrella will allow me to kick it out of the recovery cycle only till it goes through a reboot and starts the recovery loop again, on its own.

Am I the only one who has this problem or can someone help please.
