Solution for "System diagnostics failed" found

Opened today Cruiser for flashing an LG8120 and this eror message comes up for the first time. Did some analysis and finally found the problem. Earlier I was installing some cable drivers and the system said "Unknown USB Device". So, the problem lies on some specific hidden devices which were not completely installed and detected by system at some time, and Cruiser sees them and reports "System diagnostics failed". Here is explained step by step how to remove the annoying message in Cruiser:

Follow these steps to view and remove these unnecessary device drivers:
  1. Press [Windows]+[Break] to bring up the System Properties dialog box.
  2. Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
  3. Click the New button below the System Variables panel.
  4. In the New System Variable dialog box, type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in the Variable Name text box and 1 in the Variable Value text box.
  5. Click OK to return to the System Properties dialog box and then click OK again.
  6. Select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.
  7. In Device Manager, go to View | Show Hidden Devices.
  8. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers tree and look for the washed out icons named "Unknown Device".
  9. To remove an unused device driver, right-click the icon and select Uninstall.
After doing this procedure correctly, open Cruiser, and the "System diagnostics failed" message has gone.

Ha ha funny man - we had cable problems with drivers using different FTDI based cables the first time our cruiser died, then lead implemented this **** system diagnostics option.

Now I aint saying that your fix doesnt work - but on my machine - this variable is automatically set - since installing windows.

Now this might only apply to Windows XP SP2 users, as our machine uses XP SP2 and this variable was already there with a value of 1.

br,
Danny.

Because of course, you keep a record of all variables and their settings since installation. Can we see a list of them over time? Or can I just quote the "ha ha funny man" again please?
My variable is also set the same (though I'm not sure it was set to this 20 minutes after installing windows) - Not really the point of his post though, was it?

I used to feel sorry for you and your company. Now I only wish Lead had also disabled your ability to post to this forum, funny man.

It's not true that Windows sets these variables when being clean installed, but can happen if you have a special genuine copy of Windows made especially for you.
Anyhow I posted this as this was my experience today and the problem was solved like a charm.

Ok - just to shut you up

Full clean install of Windows XP SP2 OEM on our P4 3.0Ghz here, and it's genuine! we also own a computer store in our town and sell pre-built pc's to customer's specifications and provide a genuine copy of windows xp sp2 oem with each build we do.

So I have used an OEM (genuine) for each of our machines that I built for the phone shop - the machines where built 8 months ago when I came back to work for Mobile-X-TREME, mainly becuase I left for a year so I could have a long break, when I came back we decided to build three new machines as the old machines where p3's and an Athlon 1800.

Anyways - the brand new machine is a P4 3ghz, with windows xp sp2 and 1GB of Ram.

Here is a copy of my system variables that where not touched since the install, bare in mind the install finished 5mins ago and im doing this to shut you up!.

Code:
         Variable Value

ComSpec C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES 1
FP_NO_HOST_CHECK NO
NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS 2
OS Windows_NT
Path %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;C:\Nokia\Update_Manager\bin
PATHEXT .COM;.EXE;.BAT;.CMD;.VBS;.VBE;.JS;.JSE;.WSF;.WSH
PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE x86
PROCESSOR_IDENTIFIER x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 9, GenuineIntel
PROCESSOR_LEVEL 15
PROCESSOR_REVISION 0209
TEMP %SystemRoot%\TEMP
TMP %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
windir %SystemRoot%
So then - see that nobjockey - this was 5mins after a fresh install of windows xp sp2 on a P4 3.0Ghz machine with 1GB ram.

Now you also say - you used to feel sorry for me and my boss's company - that's a load of B O L L O C K S - you was the first person to backup Lead's claim's of me being a hacker or trying to spy on what cruiser was upto when i was working on phones.

So don't contradict yourself - I will only shout back! I warned you now.

Finally - why would Lead ban me from his forum, im a customer - and help others - fare enough I have dig's when people post useless information - but's thats what everyone does... so don't chat crap again - it wont get you anywhere.

br,
Danny.

I hope you wasnt referring to me using a Pirate copy of Windows becuase as you will read above - we also own a computer store and would have no need what so ever to use a non-genuine copy, especially when an OEM can be bought as cheap as Ģ45 to Ģ55 depending on quantity to another business.

Now if you meant a Specially made copy for me and wasnt referring to a non-genuine one, then did you mean a specialised ini file in the installtion package - becuase if this is case, I wasnt aware you could set variables in this, I thought this was for mainly telling windows what extra items to install from windows addon's etc and if you where to have a customised support section, like if I was to use a Dell XP CD - the installation is customised, you dont have to click any buttons apart from entering your cd-key for authenticity and clicking ok.

Well - to clarify it for you, my Windows is a Genuine XP Pro SP2 OEM package.

br,
Danny.

Can you tell me one thing? I think that you should own a flash disk for personal usage. You insert it into that clean installed PC and the PC installs drivers, and after that you use the flash disk (in this nobody can oppose. nor you). Then, you eject the flashdisk from the PC. Look after this if you can see the installed drivers for this device on Device Manager with the default options or not and then report here....
Although the variable is there 1, you are unable to view the hidden devices, till you do this procedure.

Ok to test this theory - i have done the following and come back with the following results.

I removed the variable and rebooted, and put back the variable.

Hidden devices are still not viewable by default, like you say - unless you go to the "View" menu and click "Show Hidden Devices"

Now I change the variable to 0 and rebooted the machine, hidden devices have dissapeared - and the option to show hidden devices has gone.

I think this variable is only to enable the "Show Hidden Devices" function from the "View" menu.

I stand to be corrected tho...

Anyways, I would like to leave it at this now, as the other poster said - a war has started over next to nothing, I might be to blame - and ill hold my hands up to it - so let's just end it now... I really can't be bothered.

wbr,
Danny.
