dunno what steps actually you have done but lets make it clear
autoroot file ex. cfautoroot is not recovery, it just patches kernel and installs supersu binaries... so make sure you have installed CWM recovery after autoroot... most common issue that users have is they mix stock recovery with cwm recovery... below i attached sample pictures:

If you are definetly sure you are on CWM Recovery make sure:
1. your download is complete, check md5
2. make sure your custom rom has boot.img in zip file
3. toggle signature verification in CWM menu if you trust the source (can cause brick)
