From ATI to NVIDIA not possible and vice-versa. (I have'nt see same layout of ATI and NVIDIA)
For interchange in same brand is possible, but U must be sure that:
Chip's layout fits (not only case, but pinouts too)
if changing from 64bit to 128bit U must add more RAM
if changing from 128bit to 64bit U will lose 1/2 of RAM amount
VGA bios (external or internal) must fit to Your new chip
U must know little more about schematics, straps etc.
be sure that new chip will not heats more than previous..
