I didn't install anything special when I was on 6.1.4 only at that time patch was installed and updated the phone using the inbuilt updater .
Since my operator apn is I think resides inside by default from apple that's y I didn't need to install apn manually
I prefer you try installing the carrier apn of yours from unlockit
Actually I am little bit confused about japan au carrier that how my phone is able to connect to internet and send message as when I try to open personal hotspot it says contact kddi which I think means line not active .
I have tested much only on sprint phones only
I can guide you all about sprint only ... For Japan au kddi I am also little bit unsure how it worked out if you are facing problem
