"Our investment in 5G has already achieved results, and the benefits are showing in our business licenses and products," he said. In addition to Apple, Qualcomm also received a one-time authorization fee from Huawei, valued at US$1.8 billion. Last year, the patent war between Apple and Qualcomm came to an end. Apple agreed to pay Qualcomm a huge fee to reach a multi-year agreement. This also means that this year's iPhone baseband will reuse Qualcomm products. Recent signs indicate that Apple plans to continue to use Qualcomm's X60, X65 and X70 chips until at least 2023. However, Apple is fully developing its own chips and will put them into use in future products. Last year, Apple purchased most of Intel’s modem business for $1 billion. This acquisition provides Apple with new wireless technology patents and a group of engineers with expertise in baseband development. The former Intel chip team has joined Apple's cellular network technology team. Apple chip director Johny Srouji said last year that this acquisition will speed up Apple's baseband independent research and development. |
