Nokia 6600 joystick not working

OK, I realise this thread is really old, but I am posting this reply, just in case someone does what I did when their Nokia 6600 joystick stopped working - searched everywhere for an answer.
BEFORE you replace the ICs, try CLEANING the joystick.
TURN OFF THE PHONE BEFORE DOING THIS.
All this involves is removing the faceplate and keypad, plus the rubber joystick cover thingy. The internal mechanism of the joystick is then able to be cleaned with either alcohol or some similar, non-residue, quick drying cleaning fluid. Try methylated spirits too, but just a little bit!
Couple drops into the base of the joystick, work the stick around, especially the direction it does not work (!), and hold the face/joystick down, so the grunge works it way out.
Do this a couple of times at least, and test each time for correct operation. If not working, then do it again.
If this fails to get it going, then you will have to go ahead with the ICs work.
Hope this procedure helps others, as it did for me.
