All Tricks and Tips For S60v3 v5 phones

All Tricks and Tips For S60v3 v5 phones

In this thread i will be posting tricks and tips regarding s60v3 v5 phones, as and when i find or discover them.
I have come across many questions which are related to these topics so everyone can benifit from it.
So lets start
CHANGE THE DEFAULT NAMES OF MENU ICONS IN S60V3
1)Keep the app in the top left corner of your menu screen. Select any folder and press options so that the option menu is just open.

2)Now without pressing any button or exiting the option menu press the power button (the on/off button) and put your mobile in offline mode

3)the highlight cursor will select on the first icon with the option menu still open

4)you will se a new option RENAME in the option menu now select the rename option and rename to what ever you want
5)You can use various symbol also copy any symbol from text file and paste it using the copy paste function as usual.
RESET PASSWORD OF MEMORY CARD (ONLY FOR PHONES
WITH REMOTE LOCK OPTION)
If you forget your memory card password you can unlock it by using this trick,
You can activate this feature from Tools | Settings | Security | Phone and SIM | Allow remote lock menu. The password of your memory card will be your remote lock message.
Define a remote lock password. Lock it by sending a message from another phone to your phone written as password LOCK and then unlock it by sending parsword UNLOCK
Now your memory card will be unlocked.
REMOVING THEMES
Removing themes is a common problem in s60v3 phones. Here's how its done
Do CAPS OFF
Open Xplore or any other file manager. Go to C or E/private/10207114/import. Every folder here contains 3 or 4 theme files(*.ini, *.mbm, *.mif, *.skn). If the folders don't denote the name of the theme, open the *.skn file in hex viewer and you will see the name of the theme. To remove the theme just delete the 4 files of the theme(and not the folder itself) which you want to delete.
DONE
You can do the same via mass storage connecting the phone or mmc to computer and don't forget to enable view hidden files.

ARE YOU FED UP OF TINY FONTS ON YOUR E65

Tested and working on E65 (using Verdana font) with this firmware:
i am not sure about other firmwares but you can try
1.0633.18.01
11.01.07
RM-208
Note: To get your phone firmware, press *#0000# on Idle screen
What you need:
-PC
-PC card reader
-Y-Browser or F-Explorer programs in your phone
Steps:
1. Using Y-Browser or F-Explorer, go to directory "z:" (of your phone memory). If you do not have these program, go search the forum
2. Under the "z:" folder, go to folder named "resource"
3. go to folder named "fonts"
4. you will see list of fonts file used by your phone. Note down name of each file. Most likely you will see;
S60SC.ccc
S60TCHK.ccc
S60ZDIGI.ttf
SWABIU.ttf
SWABRU.ttf
SWARIU.ttf
SWARRU.ttf
5. Take out your phone memory card and put it into your PC card reader
6. In your PC, go to folder C:/Windows/Fonts or download fonts from websites
7. Copy the verdana.ttf font file (or any other font file you prefer)
8. Duplicate font file you copied above (in this case you have to duplicate 7 times) and rename them exactly as mentioned under step 4
9. Access your memory card and find folder named "resource". If there is no such folder, create one.
10. Under the "resource" folder, create a folder named "fonts"
11. Copy all files you created under step 8, and paste under the "fonts" folder you just created under step 10
12. Put back your memory card into the phone and turn on the phone
Your phone should now have new fonts
If you want to revert back to original font, just delete all files you created under step 11 and remove the "fonts" folder (in your memory card "resource" folder)

CHANGE JAVA GAMES SCREEN RESOLUTION
open the jar file using Xplore->open META-INF(directory)->open manifest.mf(drag it to your desktop and open it with notepad)-add the two lines Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208 (the original resolution of the game)
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416 (the resolution of you phone)->drag the edited manifest.mf back to your jar(in meta-inf directory)->close winrar->send to phone->enjoy
Nokia-MIDlet-Original-Display-Size: 176,208
Nokia-MIDlet-Target-Display-Size: 352,416

NOKIA CODES
There are some useful secret codes for Nokia S60 phones to get system information. Some may be known to you some may be not.
1. *#0000# - Display the software version, the date when the software was built and the phone model. In some cases, the phone model is not the one used by marketing. It is the internal model used inside Nokia. For example, RM-36 is the internal name of Nokia 6680.
2. *#06# - Display IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identify) of your phone.
3. *#2820# (*#BTA0#) - Display the Bluetooth device address of your phone.
4. *#62209526# (*#MAC0WLAN) - Display the MAC address of the WLAN adapter. This is available only in the newer devices that support WLAN
5. *#7370# (*#RES0#)- Reset your phone to the default factory settings. Usually you will need this code when you want to reset your phone back to the same condition when you got it for the first time. When the phone ask for security code, the default one is12345.
Warning: Before you do reset the phone, make sure that you don't have important data. Your data on the phone memory will be lost once you reset it.
6. *#92702689# (*#war0anty#) - Display the life timer information of your S60 phone, i.e. the total time of phone call (in minutes). Some users have asked how to reset this timer; as far as I know the only way to reset it is by flashing the phone.
7. *#7780# (*#rst0*) - This will soft reset your phone. It is different from *#7370# because all data, like contacts, calendar and notes, are not removed. It will only reset the phone settings, such as profiles, themes and shortcuts. The default lock code is 12345.
8.Format-There is another key combination which is used to format the phone. It is useful in some cases, for example when the phone cannot reboot. The trick is by switching off the phone then pressing and holding the Call key (Green key) + * key + 3 key + power button till you see the timezone menu and then release them.
Formatting should be done only in extreme situations.

Here is a long list of must know tips and tricks for the E71. You might already know a few but if you are new to S60 and the E71in particular.

STICKY FUNCTION KEY- A quick double press on the bottom left 'function' key locks it. This is helpful in situations when you need to press a combination of keys or in applications like Gmail which can be controlled via the keypad.
1-800-WHATEVER- To dial 1-800-WHATEVER: type 1800, hit Fn, then Shift twice, type WHATEVER, and press the Call/Green key to dial. (The idea isto type in the alphabet mode in CAPITAL letters ONLY). The alphabets will automatically be converted to numbers.
ONE TOUCH MUTE- You can simply mute a call by press the button between the volume keys present on the right hand side of the phone. Press it again to cancel the mute.
REMAP THE KEYS- There are times when you feel certain keys on the E71 are being wasted when they could have come in very handy. For example, the volume keys would work wonderfully with the web browser to scroll pages or in your music player and the mute key could work as select.

TEXT MESSAGES- When in the standby mode, hold down left soft key to read out new text messages.

MAKE ANY APP RUN ON PRESSING THE MUSIC KEY OF YOUR S60 DEVICE

The MMKey's settings files of N-series(N73,N82,N95 etc.) are 1020E4FE.txt(for normal press) and 1020E4FF.txt(for long press) in z:\private\10202be9\.
Then if you want to change the MMKey's long press settings,
(1) Seach app's UID using JbakTaskMan(by highliting the app and pressing c)
(2) Using xplore extract z:\private\10202be9\1020E4FF.txt anywhere.
(3) Rewrite [Main] 0x02 line as follows.
0x00000002 int 270561987 16777216 (270561987 decimal = 0x102072C3 hexadecimal = MediaPlayer.exe UID)
--->
0x00000002 int ******** 16777216 (********:decimal coded UID which you want to start)
You can use default windows calculator to switch between dec / hex bases
For example, for X-plore line should looks like:
0x00000002 int 2684357581
16777216
because:
2684357581 decimal=0xA0000BCD hexadecimal which is xplore's UID
there is no need to change UID hex value to decimal
We can put hex UID on the line.
And its like
0x00000002 int 0xA0000BCD
You must keep character code Unicode(UTF-16). You can use free Notepad++ for this.
(4) Copy 1020E4FF.txt to c:\private\10202be9\.
(5) Reboot.
For normal press follow with 1020E4FE.txt file
you can do this for TTPOD or any other music player or any app

INCREASE PHONE MEMORY BY 5 MB(Only for symbian OS 9.1 rel 3.1 with FP1 Phones )
Follow the Steps:
1. Hack your Phone...Disable Platform Security by CapsOff.
2. Open xplore or any file manager
. Go to C:/Private/102072c4 folder. You will find a file named"reserved" of size 4.76 MB.
3. Delete it.

This reserved file is for FOTA(Firmware over the Air), and we won't need it as we never get any FOTA updates.
It does eventually comes back at times.....Most probably when you use your device manager. So at those times you can again delete it.
Deleting the file will not effect your Phone......I tested it and using My N82 without any problem.
If you want you can make a backup
in your Memory Card.
Note:
For any Loss or Damage to your Phone I shall not be Responsible...But at last this Trick is Safe.
Tested and Confirmed working on
N73, N80, N81, N82, N95

MAKE YOUR S60 DEVICE FASTER AND RECOVER RAM
In the next few posts i will post some tricks to make your phone faster and also recover precious RAM.

1. MOVE HELP FILES TO MEMORY CARD
If you are running low on phone memory and have a lot of apps installed, you can recover a part of it by transferring help files to the memory card.
Enable CAPS OFF
open Xplore or fxplorer and move C/resource/help to E/resource/help.
All the apps will find it automatically in the E drive.
This trick will increase your phone memory thereby making your phone a little bit faster.

2. DISABLE LIFEBLOG PERMANENTLY
first use jbak taskman to kill lifeblogobserver process
make sure x-plorer is set to show hidden files
then go to c/data/lifeblog/database
now delete the lifeblog.dbfile
reboot phone
now use jbak taskman to kill lifeblogobserverprocess once again!
then go to c/data/lifeblog/database
select llifeblog.db file and press 6 tick hidden and read-only reboot phone. You'll notice the phone's boot up is faster and it will also release some RAM.
if you want to use lifeblog again go toc/data/lifeblog/database
select llifeblog.db file and press 6
and untick hidden and read-only

3. STOP AUTO STARTUP OF APPS ( for a faster boot up)
You can disable the third party applications to boot at start . These applications boot at startup and slow down the phone,s startup. In order to stop them to boot them use the following process.
The info of all the start up apps is stored in c:\private\100059c9\start.dat
whenever you allow any application to start automatically at startup the file start.dat is updated. The simplest method to disable the apps to load at boot up is to simply rename the start.dat file i renamed it to start.dat.txt. After renaming it your phone will boot as it boots after a fresh formating.
When ever you again want to enable the startup apps just remove the .txt extension.
You can also edit start.dat file to enable some applications to boot at start up and disabiling others but i don,t know how to edit .dat file. But you can edit it if you know how to edit it.
The easiest method of editing the .dat file is to delete the old start.dat file and then go to the applications which you want to boot at start up and rechange their setting ie (enable auto start=yes). A new .dat file will be created automatically which will only boot those apps which you want.
You can even further boost up your phone start up by renaming files like
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F99FB_NSmlDSSettings.db
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F99FB_nsmlagentlog.db
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F99FB_NSmlDMsettings.db
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F99FE_NSml_Adapterlog.d b
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F99FE\NSml_adapterlog?? ?.dat
C:\private\101F99FD\nsmladapterlog???.dat
C:\private\101f9a06\nsmldmtree.db
C:\private\100056cf\clockapp.dat
C:\private\100059a8\nitz.dat
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_101F9A02_nsmldmfotaadapter .db
C:\private\100012A5\101f8683_ScShortcutEngine.db
C:\private\1000850\logo*.*
C:\private\100012a5\DBS_10205030_accpolicydb.db
C:\private\1000c959\localdata\commondata.D???
C:\private\1000c959\localdata\localdata.D???
To .txt files or simply delete them.
Deleting all these files is the other name of restoring your phone to factory setting without losing any application data. Deleting these files also deletes sim data mean the network data of all the sims used in a phone. When you will rename all these files your all phone setting will be lost like clock time ,month date year. When you will again set different settings like adjust the ,adjust the date duplicate files of all the files you renamed or deleted will be created mean fresh data files .to again gainyour original setting as they were before applying the hack just delete all the duplicate files and rename all the above files as they were before renaming and restart your phone all your setting will be restored.

MAKE YOUR S60 DEVICE FASTER AND RECOVER RAM .....CONTD....

1. While accessing the default app manager( Uninstaller ). It normally takes a lot of time to scan though the uninstaller files if you have lots of apps already installed. It may even give you a 'memory full unable to remove' error as well. Same could be shown while installing.
Soln. A simple solution to this is browse though using a file explorer and go to
c:\system\install and e:\system\install\ later
You will find the uninstaller files in the above directories.
All you have to do is to create a subdirectory probably as below
c:\system\install\Bypass e:\system\install\Bypass\
Normally in the install folder there would a quite a few apps which you would not be uninstalling/reinstalling frequently(non-frequent updates). All you have to do is mark these files, (These files have an *.sis extention.) cut them and paste them in the Bypass folder we created inside the install folder. You can also delete duplicate unsinstaller files( files of same app but different version-Dont delete anything if youre not sure)
This will make sure that the app manager( Uninstaller ) does not scan through most of the files as they are in the bypass folderand saves time and memory while uninstalling.
You may open the app manager( Uninstaller ) and check how fast it opens scans and uninstalls.
Now in future if you have to remove any application which is in the bypass folder, then cut it from the bypass folder and get itunder install and open the app manager( Uninstaller ) and remove. It takes an effort here but it will save time more often.
2. Boot faster and save memory
Soln. Another one, but be more careful. There is a folder called
c:\system\recogs\ and e:\system\recogs\
These folders contain *.mdl files which normally start on reboot by which reboot is delayed and they consume some RAM memory as well. Now there are certain license manager files and other app files, you need to start while starting the phone, leave them asit is. But you will find other files like quicksheet.mdl etc which is not needed to start on reboot. Such files can be marked and placed into a subdirectory \Bypass under recogs and restart the phone, which will save time and memory as well.
Do it for both c:\ and e:\ carefully.
Later on as required you may bring files from \Bypass to recogs.
Tips- If you get App closed **** error on startup/reboot. This is just the trick for you.
Dont delete anything if youre not sure.
Caution: If you're not sure of something-Dont do it, unless you are experimenting at your own risk.

THE "TO DO" TRICK

Guys i don't know if this works, whether it is true or just a placebo. Find out yourself by trying it.

1.) Change your phone's date to the 01.05.2005

2.) Go to the calendar

3.) Now we need to create two new* to-do's (Options > New entry > To-do)

4.) These two to-do's need to have the following information:

- 1. To-do:

*.Subject:Speed
*.Due date:04.08.2005
*.Priority: High

- 2. To-do:

*.Subject: Qoukie
*.Due date:04.08.2005
*.Priority: Low

5.) Confirm the both to-do notes with 'Done', but don't close the calendar application.

6.) Choose: Options > To-do view

7.) Mark 'Speed' as done, after that mark 'Qoukie' as done.

8.) Now you can close the calendar.

9.) Change the phone's date back to the actual day.

Done !
People have claimed that it makes their device faster, so just try it.

THEME EFFECT
Many nokia phones have this feature, turning it off saves RAM and the phone response improves.

CALL LOG
Changing your call log duration to 1 day is also said to improve phone response time

REMOVE UNWANTED WORDS FROM PREDICTIVE TEXT

Using this trick you can remove sometimes irritating and unwanted words from predictive text. Open xplore or a similar file manager, go to c:\predic\ directory and delete the .dat file or edit it by transfering it to pc, opening it with notepad and editing.

NOW SEE THEME ICONS N95

In the new firmware on N95 v20 & v21 & also N95 8GB Nokia has removed the theme icons in the menu, but by using this trick, you will be able to see the theme icons.

To do this go to Menu-> Tools Folder-> Utilities Folder-> Device Manager.
Here you will see your firmware version and device updated. press D-Pad right button and you'll see no server profiles defined. Press options and select New server profile, and name the server 'name', server id, host adress and user name 'Themes'. Choose your password and leave everything as it is. exit (if it says profile not saved because you didin't do some configurations, try changing connection type to bluetooth) and press Options and start configurations without connection. then go to Menu-> Applcations and you'll see the themes icon!

1 - Create a new folder "Folder" in main menu.
2 - Move the "Folder" folder so it is the first icon in menu.
3 - Place any application on the 5th place on the menu list counting horizontally on the menu list (the default icon highlighted when you press menu)

Refreshing the menu
In order to do this trick, the menu needs to be refreshed.
To refresh
1 - Place any .sis / .sisx / .jar application on your phone
2 - Install any application(you can delete it later, the installation is just to refresh the
menu)

3 - Before the installation is over, press the menu button, the default highlight will be the 5th application in the menu.

Performing the trick
1 - Directly after pressing menu button, press options (left selection key)

2 - WAIT for a couple of seconds and don't press anything more (even though it may seem like the phone has frozen)

3 - The menu will refresh: instead of having highlighted the fifth app, the highlight will be on the first icon, i.e the folder "Folder" but the options list will still be open.

4 - Choose "Move to Folder" from the Options list
5 - Then choose any folder as a target.

SETTINGS ON YOUR S60V3 DEVICE

Many a times you have no choice but to format your phone or memory card, but always wondered how to backup various settings on my phone. Here's how...

Access Point Settings-
Go to C:\PRIVATE\10202be9\persists. Scroll down until you find a file called
cccccc00.cre and copy it to your memory card. When you need to move your access points to
a new phone or back to your phone, just paste it back to the same path and restart.

Profiles-
Go to C:\PRIVATE\10202be9\persists. Copy the file 101f8798.cre to your memory card.
When you need to move your profile settings, just move this .cre file to the appropriate folder
and restart.

Web cookies-

Go to C:\PRIVATE\101f8530 and copy the file cookies.dat to your memory card. Whenever you need to restore your cookies, just copy this
file to the above location and restart.

Notes-

Go to C:\PRIVATE\100012a5 Copy the file DBS_101F8878_Notepad.dat to your memory
card thats where all the notes are saved.
Tip:If you can't delete the original file,
it's because the system is using it. To go past this, just go to Tools >> Utilities >> Memory,
and from Options, choose to make a backup of phone memory. While this is being done,
you can delete and replace files as you wish!

Ngage data-

Go to C:\PRIVATE\20007b39. Copy the folders that start with 200 to your memory card.
Whenever you need to restore your saves, just copy these folders back over!

Bluetooth-

For Bluetooth settings, there are two files: In C:\PRIVATE\10202be9\persists, you'll find
10204dac.cre. This file contains your bluetooth name. If you want to save your bluetooth paired devices, copy over DBS_100069CC_btregistry
which is in C:\PRIVATE\100012a5.

Browser Bookmarks-

Copy the file DBS_101FD685_BrowserBookmarks.db from C:\PRIVATE\100012a5.

Menu Layout-

The settings for Menu Layout are stored in a file called appshelldata.xml which is located in
C:\PRIVATE\101F4CD2\Content.If you have a pre-FP1 device like n73 or n80, your file is located in the same folder, but it's called Applications.dat

Backup Text Messages stored on Memory card-

Backup the mail2 folder in E:\PRIVATE\1000484b via mass storage.
