changing between 2g SP sims on e313

Has anyone successfully changed between 2g service providers (ex o2 and vodaphone) on an e313.
I don;t want you quoting stuff you've read, but how you managed it.

If I go through the emergency number, then the phone allows me to enter the usim unlock code, and I can get into the phone. However, this is temporary, and everytime I switch off I have to go through the same process again.
SMS doesn;t work either, but that may be just on o2 problem.
