So if you use one of these cables you MUST connect an external power supply? Or they are there in case you choose to connect external power supply? And where does one get this external power supply? And what voltage and MAH is it supposed to be? I have not seen an external power supply that had a place to attach alligator clips. Most of them have the tips to plug in say a laptop or such. How do you connect the alligator clips?

A normal 9v battery is used as external power supply.

So you simply attach the red to pos and black clip to neg post on 9volt battery? Why didnt they just put the 9volt connection on all of the cables that needed external power?

because there are many different sources for 9v supply. I use stablised 9v power adapter others use rechargable power packs etc etc
