Help newbie unlock S56

Guys, I've read lots of posts on unlocking a Siemens S56, but don't have any clear answers. Got a serial cable, but keep getting this when trying to run the software:

FREIA - Engine build 8, Frontend build 3
MISC_calibrate_delay : 8703.18 BogoMIPS
COMM_LoadBoots : selected phone family is 9
TTY_OpenCOMPort : opening COM1
COMM_IsBootRunning : bootcode does not seem to be running
COMM_LoadBoots : Waiting to power on the phone ...
COMM_LoadBoots : phone is not powered on

There was something about USB-to-Serial drivers that might need to be installed. Whassat, and where do I find 'em???
