I had an A55 V11 (I'm pretty sure it was V11 but I never actually checked - An A55 bought 2 weeks later from the same company WAS V11) a while back. It was made into a C55 by following one of the procedures found here - write a C55 bootcore, restart the phone and use winswup to write the C55 firmware, then direct unlock etc etc.

The phone, as far as I'm aware, was unlocked during this procedure although I never checked by putting a foreign SIM into it (the C55 upgrade was the purpose of the hack, not the unlock).

Does this ring true with you, or could I be mistaken?

It depends on bootcore version, not on FW version, but it is more likely that you have some of latest products with new bootcore - in that case only with testpoint (again, we are talking about cable solutions).
