Question GSM Locator

Hi,

Rumor is going around a the existence of a GSM Locator, where individuals can track down every GSM# within 100 yards. Does anybody know if this really exists? Seen it, know somebody who has one, or knows who has one? Plans to build it? Please leave a message or mail ma. Thx!

Nedalex

All that I know is that the cellular companies here in Germany can tell where exactly you are at the moment as long as your phone is turned on. They use the features of their mobile net as the phone reports its position to the transmitters of the cellular signals in a pre-defined period of time. I think it would be quite hard to build a gsm locator without having the ability of using the internal data of the mobile company. But if somebody has further information please post it in the forum.
Regards,
TheDon

Oke, next step...

Correct; all GSM Network providers can track you with a tri-cell calculation. Thats for operators... In my Alcatel phone, there is this monitor mode, and I can see in which cell I am in. Now we want to monitor somebody elses phone. Theoretically, we'd have to know the code his/her phone is sending to the operator and sniff that, link that to a chart with cell codes/locations. So the next question is:

Does anybody know if it is possible to 'sniff' somebody's cell phone?

Actually, it is possible...!!! Recently the Chaos Cumputer Club has been doing hard work.

Pretty new stuff, all in German I'm afraid.

It is possible to track gsm.
the gsm company can know which distance betwen the phone and the emitor.
and if they can know wich is the distance between you and an other emitor they can locate you easily.
