some questions about iPhone contacts transfer to computer

I got a iphone 4 a few days ago- I have noticed when I right click the iphone device in itunes that it says "back up iphone". Which I have done. What exactly does this back up and where is it stored? (Is it easy to to a restore with this backup?)
Within the iphone menu (through itunes) there is a section in the Info tab which relates to contacts where it says "Sync Contacts with...".

I have left this unticked. Do I need to have this box checked to back up my contacts? Im a little scared to do it in case it syncs my contacts on the phone with whats on the computer - which is nothing, and wipes all contact data on my phone. (Kind of like what happens when you sync an ipod with a computer that has a blank library.)
Did I download iTunes 10 to try again?But i am frustrated Apple's iTunes.Any other suggestions about iphone contacts transfer to computer plz?

Ps - Are any of the contacts stored on the sim with the iphone? What data is actually stored on the sim?(Waiting your early reply,thanks)

sure this is the safe way to restore the contacts,sms and setting of that iphone will be saved if u click the backup and restore to any of the iphone later be sure u have safe the correct name of the iphone coz if u connect iphones regularly then it will made some trouble recognizing the one u have to choose.

other than this there is also a tool called Contacts Tool search iphone applications it will help u allot if u want to install the contacts to any of the phone other than iphone it can create 10 types of backup with in it and u can mail them to ur email too.

u ask about the sync option in info this is used if u using any of the other brand of the phone u have to import the contacts by using there PC suite to synchronization service to Windows address book then u can use it, this is also good if u r coming from any other device
this includes the google gmail account setting if u r using the google contacts service then u can import the gmail contatcs on ur device by putting the information in the same bar

You don't need to tick the "Sync contacts with.." box unless you want your contacts to be synced with your PC. It will backup your Contacts in Windows Contacts so you can retrieve them back. Besides,if you are always frustrated iTunes.I want to give your advice to try out other professional transfer contact software.As far as i concerned,you can download the trail version of Tansee iPhone Transfer Contact ,which can help you back up your iPhone contacts along with contact photos to computer as a file (either txt or antc).

I would try out the way what you adviced.How ahout Tansee iPhone Transfer Contact???Is it a commercial software or free software,i want to download its trail version.Can you leave more info about it? Thanks for your attention.
