I noticed that this issue fixed by itself after restoring my iphone through itunes to 7.0.4 and set it up as new. However I use a gsm iphone and not sprint. If you have time you can try.. Also I accepted carrier settings update when asked ( I think that this is not the case )

Maybe, but I had this issue too before restoring. I bought the device on 7.0.3, I dont know if it was updated to ios 7 OTA or by itunes. I hear that OTA has problems jailbreaking, so maybe something differs and creates this issue of recognizing number.. Also, after restoring it asked me to choose REGION which I did. This is nowhere in settings...

Issue is because iPhone USSD and settings are still registered as Sprint, so it's searching for CDMA phone number. It doesn't find one, so it can't activate FaceTime/iMessage without AppleID. There is a trick if you have an older unlocked iPhone. Put your SIM in there and wait for FaceTime/iMessage Activation. Then your FaceTime/iMessage on your Sprint iPhone 5 will update with your phone number. I think as long as you don't turn off your Sprint iPhone 5, you will have iMessage/FaceTime with your phone number. Maybe you have to leave the unlocked iPhone 4/3GS on too. I don't know. There will be a fix in the future though. 4S Sprint unlocked works with FaceTime/iMessage without problems. I don't know why 5 doesn't work yet.

Is there nothing else that can be done to fix it or is this the only way?

Activate iMessage/FaceTime on your 4/3GS. Then insert R-SIM & SIM back into Sprint iPhone 5, connect to WiFi, and wait for the iMessage/FaceTime to import your phone number. I don't know how long this lasts(maybe until restart), but it's a temporary fix.

No option to edit Settings, Phone, My Number with nano R-SIM. You need R-SIM Air.

There's a new solution in the topic right below this one to get USSD codes working, but it doesn't seem to fix My Number. I am trying to write up a guide once I get it working. Thanks to everyone in the other topic(riibbentop and others) for figuring out the key for USSD codes.
