Baseband in firmware 4.0 beta

I have iPhone 3GS, new bootrom with firmware 3.1.3 and BB 5.12.01. Not jailbreaked of course, but I have shsh files (for 3.1.3). My ID is registered as developer by someone.

I'd like to try to install 4.0 beta, but I don't have a Mac. Someone told me to try with VMware Player (is free) and a downloaded Mac OS X 10.5.5 image. No success until now (Mac crashes).

Question: I assume baseband will be updated with 4.0 beta to 5.13 or so. Are there any new fixes in that baseband? Or asked differently, will the new jailbreak release by the end of this month not support this new baseband?

And why can't I install firmware 4.0 with Windows' iTunes? What is the technical difference?

Ah, yes, developer is Mac only. So they might actively block Windows platforms. Reasonable explication. Thanks.

If anybody has news about details of next jailbreak, post it here.
