Version should similar or up.

and about your 2nd query

Go to settings>system settings>System Info

You will get info like this

ROM Version : XXXXX
IPL Version : XXXXX
SPL Version : XXXXX
Ext ROM : XXXXX

if its not enough then you can read this guide
