try a hard reset.
wich software is installed? i reffer to OS wm2003 or wm2005?
to do a hard reset on wm2003press soft reset button and keep pressed in this time press power on,then release buttons.but with this operation will erase all software installed on device and revert to factory settings.

ask for password with or without sim inserted?
after hard reset you are prompted at startup to align display?

taking out the backup battery is like hard reset I think,so if cognito is installed and stiil active after hard reset I think will be still active after that.better chance with software upgrade but in bootloader mode and using himaupgradenoid to avoid errors like country id error.
