I've never before owned a smartphone, but have bought my wife an iPhone 5S for Christmas. I bought it directly from Apple, unlocked, with a T-Mobile SIM card pre-installed. Please let me know if the following is correct:

I plan to contact T-Mobile after she opens the present and have them activate the phone on their network, using the $50/month plan. Their SIM is already in the phone, so this should be straightforward.

If I don't like T-Mobile's service, for whatever reason, can I get on Amazon and buy an AT&T SIM (for less than $6), pop out the T-Mobile SIM, pop in the AT&T SIM, then contact AT&T to have them activate the phone on their network?

Is this a workable plan, or am I missing something?
