Because of no ExtSparse for System partition, firmware size also increased a lot.
3.75 GB only System.img

SW make sparse try, but since Android 9 UniSoc decrease ram buffer to 64/128/256 MB, which makes sparse almost useless for big partitions in some cases. There is possible to tune up all more thin, but we trying make it first stable and supporting all cases.
We keep checking and make some changes, if situation will change in next android versions/loaders/chipsets.

Speed, unfortunately, because they make things more useless inside, almost fast as possible.

Make sure battery charged.
If device not power on - try also make complete format and then flash.

Use dongle manager and update, but will need PC with internet..

As you can see team works in non-stop mode. You are experienced user and you know that software research is not the same as potatoes trading. Only people who sell potatoes can ask "when potatoes comes" and potatoes trader can say "oh... potatoes almost ready, please come next week".

Post software text log or screenshot, when error appears. Screenshot must include whole SW window, not just error message.
