Locating the eeprom

Using the appropriate TP 390 Hardware Maintenance Manual and your nice small Philips screw driver, dismantle the TP

Follow the Hardware Maintenance manual "FRU Keyboard" to lift up your TP's Keyboard and gain access to the underside of the System Board where the 24RF08 eeprom is located.

The eeprom is directly under the F2 key under the keyboard, on top of system board, remove led cover plate, undo 2 screws holding keyboard, pop plastic lock by pushing it backward under the LCD panel hinge, the lock is just behind the INSERT and HOME keys, it moves backward.

Lift up the keyboard from the end nearest the LCD, no need to disconnect the keyboard, just lift it to one side, place a sheet of paper in front of the LCD to protect it and rest the keyboard against the LCD at an angle.

There in a square hole in the casing under where the F2 key normally is, you can see the AT24RF08CN 8 pin SOIC eeprom.

This is the orientation of the 24RF08CN on the system Board facing the TP as you would see it normally when operating it.

There is more than one way to connect to the eeprom, it all depends on YOUR SKILLS, lighting and your eyesight etc.

Make sure you have really good lighting to see the small pins, a bare 60W globe hanging from the ceiling high above you in a dark room will make this job impossible.

The EEPROM is down a hole in the plastic casing, you may be able to solder to the pins, I have done this many times, people tell me they can't do it.

You could use sharp probes to contact the SDA and SCL pins on the EEPROM.

If you wish to use Pomona SMD Grabbers then you will have to strip the machine down a lot more to remove the plastic frame above the EEPROM and the reason for doing that is that the Pomona SMD grabbers need to be at about 30 degrees up from the flat PCB and you cannot achieve that angle with the plastic frame in the way.

Assembling your TP

You need to re-assemble or partially re-assemble your TP [depending on your chosen connection method] as you will have to have it switched ON and running to read the eeprom.

Locating the TP 600 eeprom

Using the TP 600 Hardware Maintenance Manual and your nice small Philips screw driver, dismantle the TP

Follow the Hardware Maintenance manual "FRU System Board" to dismantle your TP and gain access to the underside of the System Board where the 24C01 eeprom is located.

Using the TP 600e Hardware Maintenance Manual and your nice small Philips screw driver, dismantle the TP

Follow the Hardware Maintenance manual "FRU System Board" to dismantle your TP and gain access to the underside of the System Board where the 24RF08 eeprom is located.

Keep individual modules and their screws separate to make it easier to re assemble it correctly

The 600e has 2 EEPROMs, one is a 24C01 located near the Flash BIOS, this eeprom does NOT contain any passwords, leave it alone.

The other eeprom is located on the other side under the PCI made by Intel, it is a 24RF08 this eeprom contains the Supervisor Password and the Hard Disk Password.








NOTE: VCC is NOT connected, the ThinkPad supplies power to the eeprom later on we will switch on the TP to analyse the eeprom.

There is more than one way to connect to the eeprom, it all depends on YOUR SKILLS, lighting and your eyesight etc.

A more difficult to access connection point

Once you have your HMM search the manual for "Removing and replacing a FRU" then scroll down to 1050 Keyboard, it's on Page 82 of the manual, follow the instructions in the manual to lift up the keyboard, leave it plugged in just move it forward toward you to reveal the connection points.

You may have to remove the DIMM Standard, see page 87 of the manual 1070 DIMM (standard),

Under the DIMM you should now be able to see the LSI, see photos below.

The connections we will use are near the LSI, just under the RAM module if one is fitted.

You will need to have some RAM in the R52 for use later when we switch it ON, no don't switch it ON now, later OK.

If there is no RAM in the other DIMM slot, the one underneath the R52, then you will need to remove the RAM from above and install it in the optional DIMM socket underneath the R52.

That other DIMM socket is lustrated on page 81 of the manual, 1040 DIMM (optional), undo the single screw on the cover to gain access.

If there is already RAM installed in the other DIMM socket underneath the R52 then you can just leave it there.

If there is no RAM installed in the other DIMM socket underneath the R52 then remove the RAM from under the keyboard and install it in the DIMM socket underneath the R52, later when all the work is done reverse the procedure.

The RAM is held by 2 clips one on each side, page 81 of the manual, 1040 DIMM (optional) illustrates how to remove replace DIMM

Use one finer nail on the end of each clip to pull the clip aside

DON'T BEND THEM, just pull it out sideways just enough so the RAM pops up, then you can remove it.

You must pull both clips at the same time,

use one finger from one hand to pull on one clip
and a finger from your other hand to pull on the other clip AT THE SAME TIME
and the RAM will pop up ready to be removed.

To install RAM into a DIMM socket start with the RAM at angle of 45 degrees to the board [note the RAM can only go in one way there is a key slot that is not in the middle, it only fits one way].

Holding the RAM at 45 degrees to the board insert the RAM into the socket, make sure it is in all the way, if it wont go in don't force it, turn it over till the key slot matches the socket. Hold it into the socket and slowly fold it down flat until the two clips snap over it to lock it in place.

Alternate connection points on some R60 models

The IC is under black tape, in this image the black tape has been cut away

In this case a customer soldered fine green coloured insulated wires to SDA SCL, you can do that or use the sharp probes, your choice.

SCL and SDA points are shown above.
GND is connected to either of the metal fingers which normally clip in the RAM.
You can attach to the GND connection using an alligator clip.

Alternate connection points on some R60 models

Keyboard has been lifted up.

The connection points are under black tape, in this image the black tape has been cut away

If your R60 is under Warranty cutting the tape will most likely void your warranty, so you will need to totally strip it down so you can carefully peel back the black tape without cutting it.

In some of the different R60 System Board versions pictured above, this is not easy, you will need to have the Keyboard and LCD plugged into the system board in such a way that none touch any contacts on the system board, use paper as an insulator to keep things from electrically shorting out, later you will need to plug in the AC adaptor and switch on the TP while holding 3 probes to the GND SCL and SDA points under the system board. Do NOT switch ON the R60 now, that will be done LATER.

T30 EEPROM you treat it as 24RF08

Locating the T30 connection points

Switch the T30 OFF.

You should have downloaded the hardware Maintenance Manual already, if you have not done so,

Download and save to your PC the T30 Hardware Maintenance Manual from my TP HM Manuals page

The eeprom can be accessed underneath the TP by removing the RAM expansion cover and the RAM Module if fitted.




NOTE: VCC is NOT connected, the ThinkPad supplies power to the eeprom later on we will switch on the TP to analyse the eeprom.






Assembling your TP

You need to re-assemble your TP as you will have to have it switched ON and running to read the eeprom.
Follow the Hardware Maintenance Manual [FRU System Board], very carefully, double check screw type and size for each individual module. Assemble the TP in the reverse order used to dismantle it.
