Question Riff box questions before purchase

Hi All,

Someone had recently dropped off a hard bricked samsung vibrant which has peaked my interest in the riff box because of how many other phones it can support.

For all of you who currently own one of these devices - I was wondering if you could help answer a few questions for me.

1. What exactly comes standard in the riff box bundle? I've seen many descriptions out there and some of them outline this bundle and others just say "riff box and 2 ribbon cables". Can any of you verify if this pcb board labeled "riff jtag box" comes with the bundle?

2. Are there any suppliers in North America for accessories compatible with the riff box like the jig adapters for solderless connectivity?

3. What other components are people typically using with the riff box? I see a lot of users utilizing test hooks for voltage inplace of a battery. Is this a good way to go? Can this all be accomplished using something like this or this? Or should I look for an adapter that plugs into the RJ45 port on the riff box?

That's it for now. Any other suggestions or advice are more than welcome. I've been micro soldering with other devices for a long time now and am excited to try something new.

Thank you very much for anyones help.

Cheers

So if you are pro in micro soldering then riff box + ribon cable (included) + simple power cable to riffs rj45 port is enough to do all the work, no jigs needed.
Steady hand and good weller soldering iron with thin tip is all you need.

Weller's are definitey NOT required. Good irons, but a Weller isnt going to do half as much as your own ability.

Anyway... The purpose of a jig is to save time over bulk volume. Again not needed - but in this industry, time is money.

Thanks for the bit of info through.. appreciate it!

Any other advice/thoughts are welcome

Oh wow. Thats really good to know. I didnt know there were issues with the jigs. Thank you for that information - I will just stick to soldering then.

Can you confirm what comes in the riff box bundle? Does that green PCB which allows for easy wire swapping (seen here) come with it?

Also can you suggest a supplier for the RJ45 power supply? Cant seem to find one at ipmart although they seem to be the cheapest for the riff box itself and other accessories.

Thanks!

I just received a reponse from ipmart and they basically didnt answer any of my questions. They said that all that comes with the riffbox package is the riffbox itself which is kind of weird.

Does anyone know where I can get this from?

We buy our gear from multi-com.pl riff comes with this green pcb (anyway i didnt use it), cutted ribon cable and ribon cable to connect to jigs, power cable can be purchased from them separate.
I made this thinner wires extension to my ribon cable and thats all what i use.

Thank you very much for posting that. So these copper wires that everyone is using are just that from say a 3.5 Floppy ribbon cable. The thin copper solid core inside of that?

Why is the entire copper wire exposed like that at the end? Wouldnt it be very risky since it would be easu for them to touch each other causing a bridge while programming the nand.

Nope, for some phones you will need much thinner wires. Old charger(transformator) or handsfree will do as a source.
For some phones you might want a microscope etc.

That thinner wires on my picture are factory coated so they will not make any short when twist together.

Thank you very much for posting that info. What AWG is that wire? The highest I have here is 30AWG so it looks like I'll need to find some fine copper wire like that but I havent seen it at my local electronics suppliers.

Can you please refer me to a source where I can get high AWG wire like that?

Thanks!

I cant seem to find anything locally by the name 'jumper wire' but i'll keep looking around.
