Iphone 3g not recognised by itunes - not going into DFU mode

I've tried searching but can't find anything (searched by posts in iphone forum)

Currently on 2.2.1 and 5.08 bootloader, used fuzzy to downgrade then unlocked via 'yellowsn0w'

Everything was fine, but someone installed an app adn the iphone crashed, nothing on the screen but alarm was still going off and phone was ringing (but nothing came on the screen at all), using the search function, it said that my best option was to restore... itunes recognised the phone, i pressed shift/restore and used the 2.2.1 which i have... i had an error (cant remember which one) and now the phone has the cable on the screen and iTunes... when i connect to the pc it says

'itunes must check the software update server to identify the device.

to enable automatic updates.... blah blah blah'

The only options are 'check' and 'cancel' when i cancel, the phone's no longer seen by itunes.... can anyone help me out? What do i do?

If you try to restore your iPhone while in DFU mode, you will get an error from iTunes along with an error code, which you will have to search for on Apple’s website to get a complete description. This error usually appears if you are trying to restore a jailbroken iPhone.
And next you need to turn for FonePaw iPhone Data Recovery for help, which can save the lost data from your unrecognised iPhone directly, and ever support you to restore backup files from iTunes or iCloud.
