Member: 947561 Status: Offline Thanks Meter: 14,053 | The watercooling guide for dummies Had received in the last months loads of requests by the users about hints or full project of watercooling system for their computers, expecially the bruteforce ones. Considering is quite heavy giving the answers one by one, I'm doing this post so who wants move to watercooling can get here the infos needed. The basic structure of any watercooling system is always the same and in the detail made of these 5 components: a) Reservoir (where the coolant is stored) b) Water pump (The pump keeping the coolant circulation in the circuit) c) Waterblock (the element used to tranfer the heat from the electronic part to the coolant) d) Radiator (The element used to transfer the heat from the coolant to the air) e) The colant itself (the fluid used in circuit) The final structure of the cooling system depends on the number of parts we need to cool, the heat generate by them and the enveroinement temperature where they are used: A single gpu system in siberia won't need a big radiator while a 6990 in the sahara desert may need indeed a huge one Lets start now to talk about our choice on the component. The reservoir is used to store the coolant so the waterpump never runs dry. its function is as well to content the expansion of the coolant which could cause leaking in unwanted areas of our system. A normal reservoir has a volume between 200 and 600 ml fluid. This is pretty enaugh to keep our system safe. big reservoir offer a major safety but in the opposite side they need a longer time to cool down after the use: choose the right size for your system. The waterpump is the heart of your cooling system as if it fails your system may be badly damaged: never pick a cheap one.. go for the best!!. The essential parametre of a waterpump is the Delivery rate, expressed in litre per hour (L/h), which indicated the volume of coolant will be moved each hour in our system: higher it is more efficent will be our system. A 750 litres per hour pump is more then fine for most of the normal needs but in hot areas usinig big systems with more then 4 gpus a 1500 litres per hour one would be optimal. There are some good integrated systems nowadays including the waterpump in the reservoir like the xspc 750: these can suite most of the normal users needs. The waterblocks are used to tranfer the heats off the hot components of our computers to the coolant and these waterblocks are normally different and tailor made for each component or video card layout: pick a good waterblock made by a well knew brand like Xspc, koolance, EK, dangerden etc as the quality of the waterblock will decide the temperatures we will get oon our system. Follow always to the max the installation notes supplied and remember to add in your order some porfessional thermal paste like the arctic MX3 or MX4 as it will be needed to install them: don't use silver grease as it is conductive and can damage the cards if any spill goes on the pcb. Double check as well the compatibility list of the waterblock as if your video card is a non standard layout it can't fit properly so would be only a wasting of money. I personally use for the most EK waterblocks. The radiator is another essential part of our cooling system as from its efficency depends the final result of our job: choose an adeguate and good quality radiator. The efficency of the radiator depends on the size for the most: a good 360 mm radiator is able to cool 4 gpus without any problem, a 120mm radiator can cool well our cpu, a 480mm radiator can cool easily both. If your system has more then 4 gpus you can choose to use 2 radiators in serie or make 2 different waterpaths for the groups of cards. Just be carefull to size the radiators well, in the dubt choose a bigger one The fans used in tandem with the radiator are essential too: choose good fans with a big cfm keeping as well an eye on the noise they generate as won't be nice have a cool system where the fans are so loud you can't either talk near them The normal scheme of the system is Reservoir--->waterpump--->waterblocks--->radiator--->Reservoir Follow this scheme as in the reservoir we must have the coolant at the lowest possible temperature: if it is too hot (more then 60C°) it can damage our waterpump. Lets talk now about the hoses and the fit_tings Most of the parts we use is provided with 1/4" threads so double check it and buy only fit_tings able to suite your components. The other parameter is the hose size normally 3/8" or 10mm ID and 1/2" or 13mm OD. Choose good quality hoses and be carefully to don't create any kink as if the waterflow stops your system will be in danger. Are available some coils helping to prevent the kinks where the hose path force too much. As fit_tings the best choice is always the compression fit_tings as they give an easy manintenance of our system and is really hard the can cause leaks. As coolant go always for a not conductive one: it will save your system if any leaks happens. Most of the material I use can be bought from: www.specialtek.co.uk www.watercoolinguk.co.uk www.dangerden.com BR Alex Last edited by moulnisky; 08-22-2011 at 15:31. |

I use the last drivers ATI Catalyst 11.8 Thanks |

better to build a pc bruteforce machine with e.g. i3 CPU and 2GB RAM, W7 64bit and two AMD 6990. AMD 6970 in your iMac is like an ATI 5870 and it is take 7-8 days to scan whole salts... with two AMD 6990 you will reach the code in max 1,5day.. | |
