I think a big rock is the most important diagnostic tool. turn the unit on,if it appears dead or not working properly,smash it with the rock to be sure it's really dead and go buy a new one...lol

If u have an oscilloscope, it can make easier for troubleshooting. But it's not a must, many ways to troubleshooting hardware problem.

The best if we can combine the use of oscilloscope, multi tester, frequency counter or so on.

Check with flasher box like hwk or jaf, if it can get local mode, try to check bsi line ( maybe u need schematic ).

Has anyone tried using the Magian mobile tester? IP mart used to sell it. It can check RF, pulses n continuity. It can check even very short duration pulses that only high frequency oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers can.

It's right: oscilloscope can be used to measure 32.678 KHz(it can measure the frequency level);it can do a lot of things in gsm but you must know to work with such a good tool.I'm using oscilloscope since 2002 and I prefer all tools to be analogical not digital.For me are the best.By the way,I know peoples that works in gsm service but doesn't know the difference beetwen a diodde and a varistor,termistor,fuse...and others;that persons they'll gone say:A oscilloscope it's not good for gsm.My vote is for using a oscilloscope and every gsm service must have a such tool;
Regards!

if some one use an multemeter wich include frequency meter as well as capacitor meter that equipment will do wonders on the gsm repairing . but you still have to work with the diagrams as well as knowing the values of te componet that you are measuring . beter way is having your hands on it

here am going to give a litle tutorial how to use an oscilloscope.
first you loock at your front panel, you are going to see variables saying ch that is the chanel that you connect the probes, then you loock at the screen you are going to see squares that is your scale.
so let start let say that you pretent to measure a sinusoidal wave with a frequency of 5hz of 5v that you connect to ch1. now you put your vpd variable (wich is volts per division ) at 1 and
nou you have to determine the time by using the formulae t=1:f you are going to know in secounds the time that you are going ti set your tpd (time per division).
for instance in our example t=1:5.
so you loock at your screen and your wave will be at 5 division heighbecause if yopu remember you put ai 1 vot per division ,and 0.2 secounds you put as well as 100ms per division your wave will be at 2division with .if ypou didint andertood please tell me
